Mantoux (TB Skin) Test

A skin test that checks for previous TB infection. Often required before BCG vaccination, for work, or after possible exposure.

The Mantoux test involves a small amount of fluid injected just under the skin of the forearm. A clinician then examines the site 48 to 72 hours later and measures the reaction, so two appointments are needed.

If the result indicates likely current or previous TB, the BCG vaccine is not given and we will discuss next steps with you.

Timing around other vaccines

A recent live vaccine such as MMR can affect the accuracy of a Mantoux result, so we generally allow a gap of about four weeks. Tell us about any recent vaccinations when you book so the timing is right.
